Over the course of two days, from 11 to 12 December 2023, the Winter School offered a versatile program featuring lectures in the morning and workshops in the afternoon tailored to the intricacies of research data management. These sessions, aimed at students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers, covered a variety of pertinent subjects including research data management within large collaborative projects, electronic lab notebooks, metadata, and the development of knowledge graphs.
• Introduction to Research Data Management: Prof. Martina Zimmermann of the Fraunhofer Institute IWS kicked off the event with an in-depth look at the principles and practices of data management within the field.
• Digitalization in Experimental Materials Science and ELNs: Consolidating two essential topics into one informative segment, Dr. S. Brinckmann from Forschungszentrum Jülich navigated through the use of electronic lab notebooks and the broader digitalization efforts in materials science, including a question and answer segment to delve deeper into the subject matter.
• Metadata Essentials: Dr. A. Azocar Guzman from Forschungszentrum Jülich demystified the concept of metadata, illustrating its crucial role in the management and accessibility of research data.
• Ontology and Knowledge Graphs: E. Norouzi from FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure discussed the development and application of ontologies and knowledge graphs, emphasizing their importance in structuring data for better analysis and interpretation.
• User Journey in Research and AM-Twin: I. Bagov and Dr. N. Garabedian from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) examined the user journey within the context of tribology, while Dr. L. Gerdt from Fraunhofer IWS expanded on this theme by presenting on the User Journey AM-Twin, offering a perspective on the practical applications in a specific research project.
The consortium's goal is to steward the digital transformation in the field through community-driven initiatives. The Winter School's hybrid format exemplified this approach, providing a dynamic forum for knowledge exchange and networking.
This event, in conjunction with the previously held NFDI-MatWerk Summer School, will serve as a model for future educational gatherings. Stay tuned for further updates.
