About NFDI-MatWerk

Task Area (Meta)Data Interoperability

The Task Area (Meta)Data Interoperability (TA-MDI) provides the technical backbone of NFDI-MatWerk. Its mission is to build a scalable and interoperable infrastructure ecosystem that connects distributed services, workflows, and tools-ensuring that they can be integrated and used across research groups, institutions, and domains. Formerly referred to as the "Digital Materials Environment (DME)," this ecosystem now evolves into a federated architecture supported by common standards, interfaces, and concepts.

A central element is the implementation of the Fair Digital Object (FDO) concept, which serves as the basic interoperability layer within NFDI-MatWerk and links to both semantic infrastructures and workflow environments. TA-MDI not only ensures technical integration, but also facilitates adoption through outreach, onboarding, and training activities for researchers and local IT providers.
